About
Charlotte Beck is a research artist based in Oakland, California. Using (mostly) camera-less photography, Charlotte explores symbolism through an occult lens, presenting her findings using cyanotypes and other antiquated darkroom techniques. Her current body of work draws inspiration from divination, alchemy, and the Jungian concept of the collective unconscious.
Maintenance Actions
My creative and spiritual practice are intertwined. Whenever I am feeling stuck, whether it is a creative block or a long stretch of rejections, I usually turn to ritual. I will go to the botanica to pick up a 7 day candle (road opener is good for getting unstuck). I burn the candle and pay attention to any soot that collects on the glass. If it burns black it is an indicator for me that it didn’t work and more action is needed, if it burns clean it lets me know it is working. If necessary, I use cleansing incense and ritual baths to help the magick along. I can’t say for certain whether it works, but these symbolic actions help me to feel like I have more control over my destiny and help me to maintain my creative energy.
