About

Charlotte Beck is a research artist based in Oakland, California. Using (mostly) camera-less photography, Charlotte explores symbolism through an occult lens, presenting her findings using cyanotypes and other antiquated darkroom techniques. Her current body of work draws inspiration from divination, alchemy, and the Jungian concept of the collective unconscious.

Maintenance Actions

Recently, I was feeling blocked (creatively and in regards to opportunities) so I went to a botánica to get a ritual candle. I ended up getting a candle devoted to ellegua who guards the crossroads and opens doors. The candle glass turned black with soot as it burned (a signal to me that it was unsuccessful). I then returned to the botánica to get a ritual bath for unblocking(a blend of herbs and flowers that you brew as a tea and bathe in it), I sat in the bathtub and poured it over my head. The next day I burned another candle which burned clean (a signal to me that it was working). I often turn to ritual when it comes to preparing myself for making art and to aid in being accepted for opportunities. Whether or not it works is besides the point, I think it is the feeling of having some sort of control that is the attraction for me. Another ritual I recently completed was tearing up old artwork to make paper for new artwork which was transformative for me. (If you’re interested in including any of this I can stage theses acts and take pictures because I don’t have any of it documented).
